$10-Million to College; Other Gifts

Tom Marsico, founder and chairman of Marsico Capital Management, in Denver, and his wife, Cydney, have donated $10-million for a program to improve the undergraduate arts and sciences programs at the University of Denver. The Marsicos, both alumni of the university, live in Englewood, Colo.

Other nonprofit organizations received large donations:

Auburn U. (Ala.): $1-million from Bennie Bray, an alumnus and co-founder of Monarch Capital Partners, in Dallas, to support undergraduate scholarships and a professorship in the business college.

Campbellsville U. (Ky.): $1-million from George W. Ransdell, a university trustee, of Louisville, Ky., and his wife, Marie, to help build a new chapel and a facility for the School of Theology.

Cape Cod Hospital (Hyannis, Mass.): $5-million from David Mugar, a real-estate developer in Cotuit, Mass., to help build the Mugar Patient Care Tower, a 60-bed patient-care facility.

Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (New York): $1-million pledge from Terry K. Watanabe, the founder of TKW Enterprises, a venture-capital company, and former chief executive officer of the Oriental Trading Company, in Omaha, to support the organization’s programs.

Ivy Tech State College-Wabash Valley (Terre Haute, Ind.): $1-million bequest from Ralph G. and Mary Barkley, who were investors, to endow a scholarship.

Johns Hopkins U. (Baltimore): $2-million from Mark Rubenstein and his children, David, Jonathan, and Hilary, to establish an oncology professorship at the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore): $4-million from Jane Meyerhoff, an emeritus trustee of the college, and her husband, Robert, to help build a new dormitory.

Oklahoma City University: $8-million from Wanda L. Bass, a university trustee and chairman of the board of directors of the First National Bank & Trust Company of McAlester, in Oklahoma, to help build a music center.

Pennsylvania State U. (University Park): $4-million from J. David Rogers, of Darien, Conn., a former partner at Goldman Sachs, in New York, who went on to an investment firm in Greenwich, Conn., and his wife, Patricia, to help construct a building for the business school.

Rowan U. (Glassboro, N.J.): $1-million from Fredric and Jean Edelman, to help build a planetarium in a science building that is under construction.

Saint Francis Hospital and Health Centers (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.): $1-million from an anonymous donor, to support the hospital’s cancer center.

Southwestern Medical Foundation (Dallas): $1.1-million from Grant Dove, a former executive vice president at Texas Instruments and the current managing partner of Technology Strategies & Alliances, in Menlo Park, Calif., to establish a professorship in oncology and support oncology research at the U. of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, where he is currently undergoing cancer treatment; $1.1-million from Trammell Crow, a Dallas businessman who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, his wife, Margaret, owner of MDC Gift Shops, and their daughter and son-in-law, Lucy and Henry M. Billingsley, to endow a professorship for Alzheimer’s and geriatric research at the U. of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.

St. Mary’s College of Maryland (St. Mary’s City): $1.2-million from G. Thomas Daugherty, president of Maryland Bank and Trust and a college trustee, and his wife, Helen, a sociology professor at the college, to endow a professorship in the historical and social sciences.

YWCA of Terre Haute (Ind.): $1-million bequest from Ralph G. and Mary Barkley, who were investors, to help expand the building that houses the organization.
