$20-Million Given to Hospitality School at University of Central Florida; Other Gifts

Five organizations have received large gifts:

• The University of Central Florida’s School of Hospitality Management, in Orlando, has received $20-million from Harris Rosen, a university trustee and founder of Rosen Hotels & Resorts, in Orlando. Mr. Rosen provided $18-million to construct a new facility to house the school, and $2-million for scholarships.
• Baylor University, in Waco, Tex., has received approximately $19.4-million following the dissolution of the Marrs and Verna McLean Foundation Trust, in San Antonio. Two-thirds of the unrestricted proceeds will support the main campus, while the remaining third will go to the Baylor College of Medicine, in Houston. The trust was established in 1953 by Marrs McLean, an oil and gas developer in Beaumont, Tex. Mr. McLean stipulated that the trust be dissolved after 50 years.
• Gettysburg College, in Pennsylvania, has received a bequest of approximately $14-million from F. William Sunderman, an alumnus.

  Mr. Sunderman, who died in March at age 104, left the college his personal belongings, including furniture, antique violin bows, musical scores, and other items, as well as his financial investments. Mr. Sunderman was medical director of explosive research at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, in New Mexico, during World War II. More recently, he was professor emeritus of pathology and laboratory medicine at Hahnemann U. Medical College, in Philadelphia.

• The City University of New York, Brooklyn College has received $10-million from Claire Tow and her husband, Leonard, both alumni, to create a performing-arts center. Mr. Tow is a trustee of the college’s foundation and chief executive officer of Citizens Communications, in Stamford, Conn.
• Ohio State University, in Columbus, has received $10-million from Clara M. (Claire) Scott and her husband, Peter, an alumnus and a retired chairman of Emhart Teknologies, in Shelton, Conn. The gift will help construct a laboratory for the department of mechanical engineering.

Other recent gifts:

Johns Hopkins U. (Baltimore): $1-million from T. Richard Butera, a developer and sports entrepreneur in Aspen, Colo., and a member of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Board of Visitors, to support stem-cell and cancer research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Linfield College (McMinnville, Ore.): $6.4-million unrestricted bequest from Jereld R. Nicholson, who owned Underhill Ranch, in Dufur, Ore. Mr. Nicholson died in June 2002.

Pacific U. (Forest Grove, Ore.): $4-million bequest from Elise Elliott, of San Francisco,, for programs and scholarships in the College of Arts and Sciences. Ms. Elliot died on March 18.

San Antonio Community Hospital (Upland, Calif.): $3.1-million in the form of a charitable remainder trust from Edna Olive and her husband, Orval, early investors in United Parcel Service, in Atlanta, to help establish a department of emergency medicine.

Seattle Center Foundation: $1-million from Charles Simonyi, founder and president of Intentional Software Corporation, in Bellevue, Wash., to help create a performing-arts center.

U. of Dayton (Ohio): $1-million from Susan David, her husband, Richard, and their family, of Dayton, to support the Center for Portfolio Management in the School of Business Administration. Mr. David, an alumnus and former president and co-founder of Flagship Resources, is a member of the university’s Board of Trustees.

U. of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas: $1-million from Sydney Huffines and her husband, J.L., a trustee of the center’s foundation and the owner of six car dealerships in the Dallas metropolitan area, to support clinical-treatment programs and medical research.

Weizmann Institute of Science (Rehovot, Israel): $1-million from the family of the late Blanche Willner, whose husband, Albert, is president of the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science, in New York. The gift will support academic programs for high-school students, scholarships for graduate students, and scientific research. Ms. Willner died in September 2002.

West Virginia U. (Morgantown): $1-million from John McConnell, founder and former chairman of Worthington Industries, in Columbus, Ohio, to establish a chair in speech communication.

Wilkes U. (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.): $1.5-million from Jay Sidhu, an alumnus and chairman and chief executive officer of Sovereign Bank, in Reading, Pa., to establish a School of Business and Leadership.
