The Policy Sampler: A Resource for Nonprofit Boards, by Kathleen Fletcher, provides dozens of sample policies and job descriptions to help board members effectively steer the work of their non-profit organizations and avoid ethical pitfalls. Ms. Fletcher, a management consultant in San Francisco, writes that while many boards have their bylaws cemented into place to protect them from the will of the majority, board policies can provide flexibility. She covers finances, acceptance of gifts, risk management, ethics, sexual harassment, compensation, and public relations. Her job descriptions encapsulate board chair, board member, president-elect, treasurer, assorted committees of the board, and chief executive. The booklet includes a PC-formatted diskette containing sample policies and job descriptions that board members can tailor to their needs.
