A Trustee’s Manual for Setting Executive Compensation

June 9, 2005 | Read Time: 1 minute

Dollars and Sense: The Nonprofit Board’s Guide to Determining Chief Executive Compensation, by Brian H. Vogel and Charles W. Quatt, says that nonprofit trustees must execute a “careful balancing act” in deciding how to compensate their chief executives. While a good salary and benefits are necessary to attract the best candidates, the authors write, a compensation package that is too generous could conflict with the organization’s mission and even attract government scrutiny. The authors, both of Quatt Associates, a consulting company that specializes in compensation and other human-resources matters, provide guidance on how an organization’s mission and culture, and the compensation given to other nonprofit executives in the field, can help determine pay and benefits. The book also offers tips on drafting a job description and employment contracts, and on avoiding legal troubles and criticism from people within and outside the organization.
