Gov. Mitt Romney, Republican of Massachusetts, says he plans to ask the state legislature to exempt religious organizations from antidiscrimination laws so that Christian adoption groups could legally refuse to place children with gay couples, reports The Boston Globe. The governor’s announcement comes on the heels of a controversy at Catholic Charities of Boston, which abandoned its adoption services last week because state law requires that qualified gay and lesbian people be allowed to adopt. A spokeswoman for Robert E. Travaglini, president of the state senate, said that such a bill would have little support among his collegues.
