The National Society of Fund Raising Executives has named Paulette V. Maehara as its new chief executive officer, effective June 1.
Ms. Maehara is currently chief executive of the Epilepsy Foundation.
One of her first challenges at the society will be to replenish the financial reserves of the society, which has an annual budget of $5.5-million. A deficit of nearly $420,000 from 1996 and 1997 will eat up more than half of the roughly $700,000 currently held in an emergency reserve fund, according to Ron Carroll, president of the society’s Board of Directors.
Mr. Carroll said that the society overspent its budget during the last two years because a computer error overstated the amount of money available.
Board members said that Ms. Maehara’s financial acumen made her a winning candidate. Her experience includes fund raising and increasing membership and other forms of revenue at two large non-profit organizations. In her previous job as vice-president of Project Hope, Ms. Maehara helped increase revenue by 40 per cent during her four-year tenure.
