Atlanta Art Museum Receives $12-Million; Other Recent Gifts

The High Museum of Art, in Atlanta, has received $12-million from John Wieland, chief executive officer and chairman of John Wieland Homes & Neighborhoods, in Atlanta, and his wife, Sue, for capital improvements.

The gift will help construct three new buildings that will house museum collections and programs.

Other recent gifts:

American Association for the Advancement of Science (Washington): $5.25-million from William T. Golden, former treasurer of the association, to create an endowment for new programs on science policy.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers International (New York): $1.4-million bequest from Lucille Clarke, daughter of the late Charles W.E. Clarke, who was vice president and director of United Engineers and Constructors, Philadelphia. The gift will support scholarships for mechanical-engineering students.

Dominican U. (River Forest, Ill.): $1.5-million from Doris K. Christopher, founder and chairman of the Pampered Chef, a kitchen-tool company, in River Forest, and her husband, Jay, to endow a chair in business ethics.

Haverford College (Pa.): $2-million from an anonymous donor to support the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship.

Norfolk Botanical Garden (Va.): $10-million from the estate of Sarah Lee Kirby Baker and her husband, Isaac Mitchell Baker Jr., former president of Baker Sheet Metal Corporation, in Norfolk, for endowment.

State U. of New York at Oswego: $2.2-million bequest from the trust of Charles L. Wiley, an alumnus and captain in the U.S. Navy, for unrestricted use.

Tennessee Technological U. (Cookeville): $3-million from an anonymous alumnus and his wife in the form of a charitable-remainder trust, to the College of Business Administration.

U. of Georgia (Athens): $3.28-million bequest from George Winship Nunnally, an alumnus and former president of the Nunnally Candy Company, in Atlanta, for scholarships.

U. of Indianapolis: $8.6-million from Christel DeHaan, co-founder of Resort Condominiums International (Indianapolis), for capital improvements and to endow a chair in the Center for Aging and Community, and $2-million from Jerry Martin, president of Jerry Martin and Associates (Indianapolis), and his wife, Elsie, for academic and research programs.

U. of San Diego: $5-million from Joan B. Kroc, former owner of the San Diego Padres baseball team, and the wife of the late Ray A. Kroc, founder of the McDonald’s restaurant chain, for an endowed lecture series at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice.

U. of Wyoming (Laramie): $1-million from Bob Berry, of Sheridan, Wyo., a cattle rancher and former president and chief executive officer of United States Liability Insurance Group, in Wayne, Pa., and his wife, Carol, for an endowed chair in ecology with an emphasis on ornithology.

United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona: Gifts totaling $1-million from the charitable foundations directed by the Lohse family of Tucson, for endowment.

Wagner College (Staten Island, N.Y.): $7.9-million from an anonymous donor to endow a chair in history and to support academic programs.
