Banker Offers Matching Funds for Latino Student Savers

March 18, 2009

A Boston-area investment banker and immigrant-rights activist is offering to set aside $50 a month for students in his college-prep program for local Hispanic teens — if they or their parents do the same, The Boston Globe reports.

Bob Hildreth, who founded La Vida Scholars, in Lynn, Mass., said he wants to encourage the habit of saving for college among Hispanic families, many of which he said have the means to set aside funds and persuade their kids to earn a degree but are more likely to send money to relatives in their home countries.
