Battle for Control Imperils Central Florida Social-Services Charity

A power struggle is causing trouble for The Mustard Seed, a grass-roots Florida charity that provides furniture and clothes to struggling families, says the Orlando Sentinel.
Several members of the 25-year-old nonprofit organization’s board have quit or been removed in recent months amid a power struggle between the charity’s founder, Carol Kane, and a longtime staff member who was fired in April, six months after being named the charity’s new CEO.
Amid the legal fight and accusations of financial mismanagement, the government of Orange County, Fla., and the Heart of Florida United Way have cut off their grants to the organization, which distributes nearly $3-million in goods annually.
