Bloomberg Gift to World Health Organization Announced

New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg plans to give $9-million to the World Health Organization to support global traffic safety programs, the group announced September 16, The New York Times reports.
In addition, the mayor’s office released a list today of his 2006 donations, which totaled more than $165-million. Mr. Bloomberg first disclosed the amount of his 2006 donations to The Chronicle of Philanthropy in February for its annual list of the most-generous donors but would not name all of the organizations to which he gave.
Mr. Bloomberg, founder of a financial-news empire and one the nation’s wealthiest people, has said for many years that he intends to give away the bulk of his fortune, which is estimated to be at least $5-billion and possibly more than $13-billion, according to the Times.
He has denied rumors that he plans to run for president and says he is making plans to devote his time to philanthropy once he leaves office at the end of 2009. Over the past year, he has bought a building on New York’s Upper East Side to house the foundation he plans to start after his term as mayor ends.
