Boston Foundation Report Raises Small Arts Groups’ Ire

The Boston Foundation’s recent report regarding the local arts scene has small arts groups using their creative resources to demonstrate their dissent, reports The Boston Globe.
The report maintains that while large Boston institutions — such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra — remain viable, many smaller arts groups are struggling to stay relevant and financially solvent. Such organizations should consider shutting down, if they’ve “lost resonance with … audience or supporters,” according to the report, released December 19.
Ian MacKinnon organized a “die-in” at a Cambridge gallery on January 13, where artists could take to its satirical conclusion the foundation’s suggestion that struggling arts groups consider “an exit strategy.”
In addition to the “die-in,” the report has motivated several small groups to discuss alternative strategies, such as building performance space, to create more financial stability.
