British Charity Workers’ Union Blasts Nonprofit Executives on Pay

Unite, the union that represents British charity workers, is taking aim at what it terms excessive salaries among top executives in the country’s nonprofit field, according to The Independent.

More than 50 British nonprofit chief executives were paid more than $167,000 last year, with one earning about $650,000, a finding that Rachael Maskell, of Unite, said “corrupts the ethos of the voluntary sector and is an insult” to donors of average means.

Stephen Bubb, leader of the Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organizations, accused Unite of hypocrisy, noting that its joint general secretaries earned more than $500,000 between them. “They are running a complex organization with millions of members and a broad range of stakeholders, just like other [nonprofit] leaders,” Mr. Bubb said.
