Budget-Deal Collapse Deepens Gloom for Pennsylvania Nonprofit Groups

Reports that a tentative budget deal in the Pennsylvania legislature is unraveling ahead of a Sunday deadline have raised a fresh round of worries for the state’s strapped nonprofit organizations, The Scranton Times Tribune reports.

Gary Drapek, chairman of the board of the United Way of Pennsylvania, said he felt “disgust, a little bit of anger, a little bit of disbelief” over the apparent renewal of the three-month stalemate, which has held up state and local grants and contracts for charities and plunged many into a deep fiscal hole.

Many local providers have reduced services and stretched lines of credit to remain open but say they are not sure how much longer than can continue without a budget deal.
