California Teacher, Virginia Doctor Among ‘Points of Light’

Following are the people and organizations that have most recently been named to receive President Clinton’s Daily Points of Light Award.

The recipients:
1633. Heidi Figel, Slippery Rock, Pa., a project leader at the Community Service-Learning Institute, where she leads projects that match volunteers with children.
1634. Amanda Jo Mooren, Courtland, Kan., who volunteered at the Parkview Haven Nursing Home for two years, providing activities for the residents; she also organized an auction that raised $5,000 for a homeless shelter in Salina, Kan.
1635. Brite Lites of New Horizons, North Hills, Calif., a music and dance troupe composed of 20 adults with developmental disabilities who perform at schools, corporations, and community organizations.
1636. Michael Lassere, Low Moor, Va., a doctor who started a volunteer-run free clinic in the medically underserved Allegheny Highlands region of Virginia.
1637. Steven Starcher, Fresno, Calif., a high-school teacher who established programs through which students and school staff members help to plant and care for trees at Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park; he also leads a program through which special-education students participate in forest-restoration activities.
