California Urges Caution in Wildfire Giving

September 3, 2009 | Read Time: 1 minute

California Attorney General Jerry Brown is warning residents hoping to help victims of the wildfires ravaging the Los Angeles area to be on the lookout for sham solicitations, reports the Los Angeles Times.

“After virtually every disaster, scam artists come out of the woodwork to defraud individuals wishing to help victims,” Mr. Brown said in a statement Wednesday.

His office offered several tips to avoid such frauds, such as seeking out known organizations to contribute to rather than responding to solicitations, listening closely to a group’s name to avoid copycats, and checking charity names against the state’s Registry of Charitable Trusts.
