Chairwoman Resigns From Beard Foundation

Dorothy Cann Hamilton, the chairwoman of the board of trustees of the James Beard Foundation, resigned yesterday — five months early — from her position from the culinary charity, saying she wanted to avoid a potential conflict of interest, reports The New York Times.
Ms. Hamilton said she wanted to insure that several projects she is involved in can remain in consideration for the 2008 James Beard Awards.
The foundation has been subject to scrutiny over its governance practices since its former president, Leonard F. Pickell Jr., pleaded guilty to stealing from the organization in 2005. Susan Ungaro, the foundation’s president, said that Ms. Hamilton’s early resignation was an ongoing sign of “good governance.”
