Charities’ ‘Action Agenda’ Calls for More Political Support

Nonprofit leaders representing thousands of U.S. charities have signed an online manifesto saying the government has not done enough to help them weather the economic meltdown, The New York Times reports.

Lester M. Salamon, director of Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Civil Society Studies and author of the manifesto, entitled “Forward Together: Empowering America’s Citizen Sector for the Change We Need,” said its message is that “the partnership between us and the government isn’t working, and that’s not good for the country.”
