Charities Say More Americans Make ‘Stretch’ Gifts

While big gifts get the most attention, donations that seem impossible given an individual’s personal wealth — known as “stretch” gifts — are on the rise, reports The Wall Street Journal.

Helping the trend along has been the Pension Protection Act of 2006, which allowed tax-free donations from retirement accounts for the first time, the newspaper reports. Charities like CARE and Save the Children report an uptick in the number of such gifts by people who have lived modestly throughout their lives.
