Charity Impact of ‘Cash for Clunkers’ Mixed

Some charities that rely on donations of cars and other vehicles to raise money are taking a hit with the popularity of the federal “cash for clunkers” program, but others have seen benefits since the government began offering motorists money to trade in old cars for more fuel-efficient models, the Associated Press reports.

Cheryl Rios of Texas Can, a Dallas nonprofit organization that serves troubled kids, estimated the organization has lost $75,000 due to a reduction in car and truck donations. But Goodwill Industries of Central Texas saw an increase in donations last month as publicity about cash for clunkers has raised general awareness about giving up old cars, Jerry Davis, the organization’s chief executive, said.
