Charity Seeking to Bring Computers to Developing Countries Offers New Approach

To help offset the cost of producing and shipping its solar-powered computers to children in developing countries, the One Laptop Per Child Foundation of Massachusetts has announced that it will sell its products in the United States, too, reports The Wall Street Journal.
However, the foundation will sell the laptops domestically only in sets of two — one of which the buyer keeps, one of which will get shipped to a child in Africa or Asia. The sets, which will retail for $399, were the product of a long internal debate at the organization, the article reports, because the group feared the domestic product would distract from its international goals.
The nonprofit group is also negotiating with state governors to sell the laptops to school districts.
