Charity’s Former Financial Officer Discloses Madoff Affair in Memoir

In a soon-to-be-published book, the former chief financial officer of the Jewish charity Hadassah says she was having an affair with Bernard Madoff while the organization was investing millions with him, The New York Times reports.

Nancy Falchuk, president of Hadassah, said in a letter to the organization’s national board that officials of the charity “knew nothing” of the Madoff-Weinstein affair and were “shocked” by her revelation.

Sheryl Weinstein’s Madoff’s Other Secret: Love, Money, Bernie, and Me will be issued by St. Martin’s Press this month. A spokesman for the publisher said Ms. Weinstein’s relationship with the now-disgraced financier “spanned 20 years.”

From 1988 until 1997, when Ms. Weinstein left Hadassah, the charity invested some $40-million with Madoff and withdrew more than $130-million from its accounts before his Ponzi scheme was revealed in December.
