Chinese Earthquake May Open Doors for Charities

Some experts hope that in the wake of the earthquake that struck China earlier this month, charities will come to play an increased role in shaping the country, reports the Financial Times.

Many Chinese people have donated to relief groups that are not under government control, which suggests the government’s control of China may not be as powerful as it used to be, the newspaper says.

Wan Yanhai, an organizer on behalf of people with HIV/AIDS in China, said, “The government cannot do everything by itself.”

Nancy E. Schwartz, a nonprofit marketing consultant, has been exploring in her blog the idea of a reinvigorated nonprofit movement in China after the earthquake, The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports in its online column, Give and Take.
