Donor Conflicts Possible Between Clinton Campaign and Foundation

A potential conflict of interest may occur between the William J. Clinton Foundation and the presidential campaign of Mr. Clinton’s wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, reports Salon. The online news organization says some of the foundation’s major donors are also Ms. Clinton’s top fund raisers.

Charitable nonprofit groups are not required by law to reveal the identities of individual donors. But Salon’s research of foundation records and other sources found that some very powerful Democratic donors also gave to Mr. Clinton’s foundation. Among them was Philip Murphy, national finance chair of the Democratic National Committee. Several top fund raisers for Ms. Clinton’s campaign also donated to the foundation. These include Ted Waitt, founder of Gateway Computers, and Jon Corzine, governor of New Jersey and former chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs.

The Clintons declined to comment on the article.

At the Clinton Global Initiative earlier this month, however, Mr. Clinton said he believed he would “have extra responsibilities for transparency should Hillary get elected, The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports. He said he would consider naming future contributors to his charity, but not people who had given in the past with the understanding that their gifts would be anonymous.
