Employers Value Volunteering Experience, Study Says

Summary: Employers value job seekers’ volunteer service, but not many job candidates realize it, according to a study about attitudes regarding volunteer service.
Eighty-two percent of hiring managers surveyed said they were more likely to choose job candidates who have volunteer experience. Yet respondents said only 30 percent of the resumes they received from job seekers had that kind of information.
Forty percent of respondents said they did not list volunteer service on their own resumes. The reasons vary: Seventeen percent said they didn’t think employers cared, 35 percent said they wanted employers to focus on their professional skills, and 18 percent said that information wouldn’t fit.
The study included survey results from 2,506 respondents in 13 cities across the United States.
