June 9, 2008 | Read Time: 1 minute

One of Europe’s most-generous philanthropists has shared his top five rules that guide his giving, reports Wealth-Bulletin.

Tom Hunter, the richest man in Scotland, who made his fortune by founding a retail-clothing chain, has pledged about $2-billion to education and humanitarian causes. His philosophy of giving:

  • Regard philanthropy as a business and be organized in donating money.
  • Have good relationships with experienced people.
  • Persuade others to support your causes.
  • Keep track of charitable projects through performance measures.
  • Learn from failure.
