Foundation Supports Commission to Assess Science Education in America

A new national commission that will assess the current state of teaching in science and mathematics at colleges and elementary and secondary schools was announced on Thursday, reports The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The panel, called the Carnegie-IAS Commission on Mathematics and Science Education, is sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Institute for Advanced Study, in Princeton, N.J.
Some observers are skeptical that the new commission will make any practical headway into a difficult and politicized subject that has already been the topic of numerous studies by blue-ribbon committees, the newspaper said.
George Soule, a spokesman for the Carnegie Corporation, said in an interview that he hopes the new committee will differ from past efforts by focusing on how to improve science teaching and to “present some actionable ways forward.”
