Free Internet Course on Managing Charities

August 13, 1998 | Read Time: 1 minute

Charity officials and others can now participate in a free, 12-course non-profit management program without ever leaving their desks.

The Management Assistance Program for Nonprofits, in St. Paul, is offering the program on its Web site. Topics of study include fund raising and grant-proposal writing, financial management and taxes, and ethics, among others.

Each course begins with on-line materials for participants to read. There are then sample questions and activities to help students understand the lessons. In the fund raising and proposal-writing course, for example, questions include, “What is the board’s role in fund raising?” and “How much money does your non-profit need to raise from fund raising?” Among the activities suggested: the creation of a fund-raising plan for the course taker’s charity.

Carter McNamara, a consultant who designed the course, says that at least 180 people have signed up so far, including students from as far away as India and New Zealand. Non-profit officials who complete the program do not receive any type of degree or certification, but Mr. McNamara says they will learn skills that they can use in their jobs.

“There is such a need for non-profit management training that produces practical results,” he says.
