October 15, 2009 | Read Time: 7 minutes

United Ways nationwide raised $4.02-billion in their 2008 campaign season, a 5-percent decline from the previous year.

Some 57 percent of the more than 1,200 local United Ways reported a decline in donations last year. Only 34 percent did so in 2007. And the number of United Ways that had an increase dropped to 32 percent last year, down from 55 percent.

In each of the preceding three campaign seasons, from 2005 to 2007, a majority of United Ways saw contributions rise.

Following are totals provided by more than 400 of the largest United Ways, all of which raised $1-million or more last year. The figures are provided by United Way Worldwide, the charity’s umbrella organization.

The figures include contributions from multiple sources including donations raised in on-the-job fund-raising campaigns for employees at companies and government agencies, corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, major gift solicitations, bequests and other planned gifts, and donated products and services. The figures do not include government grants.
