Philanthropy at Independent Schools, Third Edition, edited by Helen A. Colson, advises fund raisers at such institutions to focus on the 10 percent of potential donors who are most able to afford a large gift. Such donors contribute 85 percent of the money raised by private schools. “The development staff,” the editor writes, “should pay close attention to these top prospects’ perspectives, objectives, interests, and timetables rather than simply to the institution’s needs.” Ms. Colson is president of a consulting firm that helps private schools raise money. The collection of essays offers advice on how to rate and screen potential donors, manage a capital campaign, and solicit planned gifts. This updated edition also includes sample development and campaign plans, gift tables, budget forms, gift-acceptance policies, and examples of effective and ineffective letters to donors.
