Grant Maker Disciplines Second Founder for Deception

January 15, 2008 | Read Time: 1 minute

The board of GiveWell, an organization that makes grants and evaluates charities’ effectiveness, has disciplined a second of its top officials after he promoted the grant maker online by posing as another individual, reports The New York Times.

Elie Hassenfeld, a program officer at the group, last week was fined $5,000 for using his girlfriend’s name to steer people to GiveWell. Mr. Hassenfeld declined to comment on the situation.

Holden Karnofsky, the group’s other co-founder, was demoted a week earlier from executive director to program officer and had his pay reduced $5,000 for participating in a similar ruse, The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported.
