Here are notable new grants compiled by The Chronicle:

Lisa and Douglas Goldman Fund

$5.8 million awarded in 2015 to 211 nonprofit organizations working to reduce gun violence, strengthen K-12 public education, shift manufacturing toward sustainable production practices, engage youths in Jewish life, combat anti-Semitism, and protect access to abortion.

Grantees include the Americans for Responsible Solutions Foundation, which was founded by shooting victim and former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly. The foundation received $50,000 to test methods for diversifying and strengthening the gun-violence prevention movement.

Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation

Nearly $3.1 million to organizations strengthening children and families in need. Grantees include the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, which received $1 million for general operating support, and Excellent Schools Detroit, which received $500,000 to provide high-quality training for early childhood teachers.

John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation

A total of nearly $2.5 million for 19 documentary and interactive digital-media projects that deal with a range of issues including the Syrian refugee crisis, race relations and inequality in the U.S., mental illness, police and community relations, and environmental pollution.


John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

$2.5 million to Opera Philadelphia in support of O, its new season-opening festival set to launch in September 2017. With seven operatic happenings in six venues across the city, the 12-day event aims to attract both opera buffs and new audiences and to promote Philadelphia as a destination for experiencing opera in an urban setting.

Mary Livingston Griggs and Mary Griggs Burke Foundation

$2 million for the Asia Society Museum to establish a new endowment dedicated to exhibition development as well as related educational programs, including a lecture series.

Sohn Conference Foundation

$1.5 million for the Sohn Precision Medicine Program at Columbia University Medical Center, which will expand access to state-of-the-art genomic-sequencing technologies for children battling high-risk cancers in New York City.

Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation

$1 million over five years to Zoo Atlanta for its capital campaign. The money will help expand the African savanna exhibit, as well as improve facilities, enhance the zoo’s entrance, and make the zoo a leader in captive management of African elephants. In addition, the foundation awarded $950,000 in grants to four organizations, including the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia, to support job training and job-placement programs.

Enduring Hearts Foundation

$1 million to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to support cardiac research to enhance the lives of children needing heart transplants.


Episcopal Health Foundation

$1 million to the Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin to develop and integrate a training curriculum that focuses on overall patient health.
