Heinz and Moore Foundations Name New Presidents

Two of the nation’s wealthiest foundations — the Heinz Endowments and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation — have each named new presidents.
The Moore Foundation, in San Francisco, hired Steven McCormick, recently the president of the Nature Conservancy, for its top post, reports The East Bay Business Times. The former president of the foundation, Edward Penhoet, is retiring and will remain on the group’s board.
Mr. McCormick stunned colleagues at the Nature Conservancy last month by abruptly announcing his resignation over a weekend, according to an article in the Chronicle of Philanthropy.
The Heinz Endowments, in Pittsburgh, named Robert Vagt, former president of Davidson College, in North Carolina, its new top official, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
The appointment of a leader from outside the Pittsburgh area surprised some people, the article reports. But a Heinz spokesman said the organization believed it had found the best candidate in Mr. Vagt, an ordained minister who helped raise $272-million in a seven-year fund-raising campaign at Davidson.
