Hollywood’s Elite Eschew Hometown Charities

The entertainment industry’s big names and big money are increasingly favoring national and global causes over charities in their Los Angeles backyard, The New York Times reports.
No entertainment firms made The Los Angeles Business Journal’s July list of the region’s top 20 corporate givers, and more than four-fifths of the $15.5-million in grants awarded in 2007 by the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a charitable coalition of studios, TV networks, talent agencies, and professional organizations, went to national and international health causes.
“We have had publicists sniff us and ask if we’re expanding across country,” said Carla Sanger, the president of the nonprofit group LA’s Best, which supports school programs. “When they find out the answer is no, they back off.”
