Thirty-eight of the nation’s 50 biggest grant makers provide compensation to trustees, a Chronicle analysis has found.

Note: Twelve of the 50 wealthiest foundations do not pay their trustees. They are the Ahmanson Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Broad Foundations, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Commonwealth Fund, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Laura and John Arnold Foundation, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
