Managing Technology to Meet Your Mission
edited by Holly Ross, Katrin Verclas, and Alison Levine
This book is intended for nonprofit employees who have little or no experience with technology. Edited by Holly Ross, executive director of the Nonprofit Technology Network; Katrin Verclas, founder and executive director of MobileActive.org; and Alison Levine, a special projects fellow at the technology network, the book covers employee recruitment, information-technology planning, budgeting, online fund raising, and other areas.
It answers basic questions such as whether to purchase a desktop or notebook computer, how to pick the right database, what kind of Internet connection to select, and how to find assistance.
One chapter is devoted to online communications, including graphics of charities with effective Web sites, explanations of how to create newsletters and e-mail campaigns, and a list of what data nonprofit groups should use to track progress and how to do it. A successful Web site, the editors maintain, must be credible, encourage people to become involved, and offer interactive elements, clear navigation, and substantive content.
The book also includes samples of online fund-raising appeals, donation pages, and blogs.
