How to Help Donors Devise a ‘Generosity Plan’

February 11, 2010 | Read Time: 1 minute

The Generosity Plan: Sharing Your Time, Treasure, and Talent to Shape the World
by Kathy LeMay

Regardless of how much money people have or what skills they possess, philanthropy can be meaningfully incorporated into their daily lives, writes Kathy LeMay, founder and president of Raising Change, a fund-raising firm.

Ms. LeMay offers advice based on her work with clients and other people she has met and provides numerous anecdotes as to how they were able to become involved in causes no matter their financial or personal circumstances. She urges readers to craft a “generosity plan,” whereby they keep track of their thoughts and accomplishments related to charitable giving. The first step to creating such a plan is to think about how one’s culture, faith, personal belief systems, and family affect views on philanthropy.

She writes, “Much like tracing ancestry, reconnecting with your giving traditions creates continuity in your philanthropic efforts. You will remember what you loved about making a difference.”
