How to Network in a New City

August 2, 2007 | Read Time: 1 minute

How do nonprofit professionals network in a new city?

Heather Carpenter, who is studying to get her PhD in nonprofit management, just moved to San Diego and has several suggestions.

On her blog, Nonprofit Leadership 601, Ms. Carpenter writes that among other efforts she plans to attend a meeting of the local Association of Fundraising Professionals, will sign up for Boardnet USA to find out if there’s a charity board she could serve on, and contacted a volunteer center to sign up for one-day or half-day volunteer opportunities.

She’ll also make time for fun too. “I’m trying not to overdo it and making time for play,” such as joining a scrap-booking class and joining a choir, she writes.

What do you think? Are there other suggestions for ways people interested in nonprofit work can connect in new cities? Click on the comments link below this post to share your thoughts.
