In the Arts: Gates Makes Smithsonian Pledge, Brandeis Will Not Sell Court Foes’ Gifts

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has donated $10-million to the Smithsonian Institution’s planned National Museum of African American History and Culture, reports The Washington Post.
The gift, announced Thursday, will go to the museum’s capital campaign and to support design and construction. The facility, the Smithsonian’s 19th, is slated to open in late 2015 on the National Mall, opposite the Washington Monument.
In other arts news, Brandeis University has agreed not sell works donated to its Rose Art Museum by three benefactors who are suing to prevent the Rose’s closure, the Associated Press reports. In a court hearing Tuesday, the university also agreed to give the Massachusetts attorney general 30 days’ notice if it plans to sell any other Rose holdings.
And the Kennedy Center will get $5-million over 10 years to stage musicals, The Washington Post reports. The donation was made by a fund headed by Adrienne Arsht, a Miami businesswoman and treasurer of the Kennedy Center’s board of trustees.
