Jewish Charity Retools Fund-Raising Approach
February 13, 2009
Birthright Israel, an organization that has relied largely on multimillion-dollar gifts from big donors to send young people on free trips to Israel, is switching its focus to smaller donors to support a new $50-million campaign, reports the weekly Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles.
The charity is reducing the number of trips it finances by two-thirds, offering 8,000 slots for North Americans, compared with 24,000 last year. Many of the donors the group has traditionally relied on for support have been hard hit by the collapse of the financial industry and the recession.
