Journalist to Head Washington Think Tank

Steve Coll, a prominent journalist, has been named president of the New America Foundation, a Washington think tank, reports The New York Times.
Mr. Coll replaces Ted Halstead, who helped found the organization nearly a decade ago. The nonpartisan think tank now has a $10-million budget, the newspaper reports.
Mr. Halstead said he left because he wanted a new entrepreneurial challenge and will soon begin to manage a 620-acre parcel of eco-friendly beachfront property in Costa Rica.
Mr. Coll, a staff writer at The New Yorker who has won two Pulitzer Prizes, said the quality of the ideas that the foundation produces attracted him to the job. He also said the journalism industry had changed and that “nonprofits have to fill up some of the space that newspapers are inevitably leaving behind.”
