Kidnapped Charity Head Slain in Chechnya

The leader of a Chechen children’s charity and her husband were found shot to death today, one day after they were abducted by gunmen from their office in the regional capital of Grozny, reports The Times.

The bodies of Zarema Sadulayeva and Alik Dzhabrailov were found in a Grozny suburb, according to the head of Memorial, a Russian human-rights group. Chechen officials said they had been shot in the head and chest, the same method used to kill Memorial activist Natalia Estemirova last month.

Ms. Sadulayeva ran Save the Generations, which provides medical and psychological help to young people scarred by violence in Chechnya, which has fought two separatist wars with Russia since the 1990s.

In recent months, the region has witnessed an increase in violence, which Russian officials attribute to Islamic militants and rights groups blame on the province’s Kremlin-backed leader, Ramzan Kadyrov.
