Las Vegas Plans to Start Building $475-Million Arts Complex

Amid hard times for Las Vegas cultural institutions, the city plans to break ground in a few months on a new, $475-million arts complex, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Almost a third of the money for the Smith Center for the Performing Arts came from gifts from the local Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. Due to open in 2012, the center will be home to the Nevada Ballet and the Las Vegas Philharmonic, both of which have recently cut staff members.
Las Vegas, which relies heavily on the tourism and gambling industries, has been slammed by the economic downturn, and the recent closure of the Las Vegas Art Museum has raised questions about the city’s ability to support high culture.
