Levy Foundation Helps Institutions Preserve Priceless Archives

Arts and educational institutions nationwide have been able to discover and digitize priceless historic documents thanks to a New York foundation’s grant program to preserve archival collections and make them available online, The New York Times reports.

Since 2007 the Leon Levy Foundation’s archives and catalogs program has awarded more than $10.3-million to some two dozen organizations, resulting in finds such as the 1695 deed to George Washington’s birth home and the 1944 letter in which the term “genocide” was coined.

Among the foundation’s latest grants is money to help the New York Philharmonic digitize some 1.3 million pages, including a 1909 Mahler score marked up by the composer and later by Leonard Bernstein.
