Mass. Officials Raise Questions About Cultural Group’s Finances

The attorney general of Massachusetts has met with officials of the Citi Performing Arts Center, who have been under criticism since the Boston organization paid its director a $1.2-million bonus in 2006 while making big budget cuts in its other programs, reports The Boston Globe.
Several state legislators have also demanded to know how the charity spent $350,000 it received in state funds last year.
The Globe reported this summer that the director, Josiah Spaulding Jr., received a large bonus at the same time that Citi Center had to cut its popular free Shakespeare festival — which some summers drew 100,000 people — from three weeks to one because of budget shortfalls.
The chairman of Citi Center’s Board released a statement saying that the Globe articles were founded on “misinformation” and that he wanted to tell the attorney general’s office more details about the institution.
