Mass. Town Seeks More Money From Private Schools

Officials in Southborough, Mass., are pressing the town’s prestigious private schools to increase their payments in lieu of taxes to help the municipality through lean financial times, The Boston Globe reports.

The Southborough Board of Selectmen is establishing a committee to explore changing the payments to reflect nonprofit institutions’ ability to contribute. “When people see that you have these institutions that own quite a bit of real estate, and the tuition at these places is in the high range, it boils down to an equity issue,” Sal Giorlandino, the board chairman, said.

Institutions such as the Fay School and St. Mark’s say they are talking to local officials about increasing payments to cover municipal services to the schools.
