McGill U. Receives $43-Million

McGill University, in Montreal, has received its largest-ever donation from a single individual, $43-million from alumnus Richard H. Tomlinson.
The donation was $64-million in Canadian dollars.
Mr. Tomlinson, 76, an emeritus chemistry professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, earned the bulk of his fortune through investments in the Gennum Corporation, which manufactures microchips for hearing aids and for digital signal processing television equipment.
The gift will support the creation of six endowed chairs, fellowships for graduate students, and scholarships for undergraduate students. It will also help pay for the digital conversion of books and other research materials, as well as an endowment to support teaching, and another fund for young surgeons conducting medical and clinical research.
