The financier and his wife support a range of causes. Through their foundation, they focus on two core areas: research and clinical programs that aim to improve the treatment and prevention of hereditary cancers and efforts that expand underserved New York youths’ access to education, health care, and enrichment opportunities.
The Grays directed $25 million through their foundation last year to support research teams at Columbia University, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Mayo Clinic that are studying new approaches to detect and prevent inherited cancers. They also awarded a $3 million grant to UNCF, formerly the United Negro College Fund, to support scholarships that help New York students attend historically Black colleges and universities and a $1.5 million grant to provide swimming lessons to 2,000 second-graders in New York.
Included in the $9.1 million they gave directly was a $1.3 million gift to UJA-Federation of New York and smaller donations to 22 other organizations, including education nonprofits, Jewish groups, museums, and medical-research groups.
