While Melinda Gates enjoys a lower profile than her husband, the Microsoft founder Bill Gates, her influence on the foundation that bears their names has been comparable, reports The New York Times.

Ms. Gates is both comfortable with the personal side of foundation work—interacting easily with people overseas during visits on behalf of the organization—and focused on ensuring that the grant maker produces measurable results.
