METROPOLITAN OPERA

Mercedes Bass and her husband, Sid, a Texas oil investor, have donated $25-million to the financially strapped Metropolitan Opera of New York, reports The New York Times. The unrestricted donation, the largest in the opera house’s history, will be used to cover the organization’s deficit and bolster sales. Mrs. Bass is a board member and longtime patron of the Met.
