Modest College Endowments Show Large Returns

Some small college endowments around the country are also among the nation’s fastest growing, thanks to varied investing strategies, reports The New York Times.
Bowdoin College, in Brunswick, Me.; Hamilton College, in Clinton, N.Y.; and Furman University, in Greenville, S.C., all have assets of less than $850-million, but all had returns of greater than 21 percent on their endowments last year.
The article traces the endowments’ successes to tailored strategies that make sense for each college. Hamilton, for instance, relies on expert advice from alumni and avoids investing in bonds. For its part, Furman invests heavily in hedge funds, which make up 40 percent of its portfolio.
